47,000 walkers from 77 countries take part in the Vierdaagse. If you're coming from outside the Netherlands, a few practical things work slightly differently than for a Dutch participant.

Language and booking systems

Large platforms like Booking.com operate in English, but private hosts in the region don't always communicate in English. Expect Dutch-language replies to a direct enquiry with a local host, a short, friendly question in English is generally understood fine, even if the reply comes back in Dutch.

Travel distance: a real option, not a last resort

For a Dutch participant arriving by car, "half an hour further" is a minor inconvenience. For an international visitor travelling by train or plane, that trade-off looks different. Still, staying a bit further from Nijmegen is often a deliberate, cost-effective choice, not just a fallback when the city itself is full.

Planning your arrival and departure

Nijmegen's city centre is considerably busier than usual during Vierdaagse week, especially around midday and early evening. Allow extra travel time to and from your accommodation on walking days, and check the current NS timetable for last trains, this can differ from a regular week during the event.
